Travel Savvy’s host Paula had already traveled around the Baton Rouge and Covington areas of Louisiana, but everyone she met raved about their favorite local fishing experiences, and we just had to learn more. We travelled from the southernmost part of the state right up to the banks of a massive manmade lake, to discover what all the buzz was about!
First, we cast our line with the help of expert bass fisherman Darold Gleason from Toledo Bend, an area that is famous for some of the best bass fishing around the globe. Next, we spoke to Shane Mayfield of the Adventure South Guide Service, who guided us along the brackish waters of Louisiana’s deep south and Venice area, making for not one, but two unforgettable fishing trips.
Toledo Bend Reservoir, Louisiana
-
The Toledo Bend Reservoir is one of the largest manmade bodies of water in the southern United States, boasting top-notch bass fishing spread over 160k acres of water. (It’s no wonder this local hotspot has been ranked #1 bass fishery in the United States for the past two years and counting by Bassmaster magazine.)
-
If you’re like our host Paula, you'll want all the creature comforts after the fishing poles have been put away. Head to Cypress Bend Resort, which features an on-site spa, full service restaurant and bar, 18-hole championship golf course, premiere accommodations and so much more!
-
Want to “rough it” instead? Not to worry, both South Toledo Bend State Park and North Toledo Bend State Park feature designated camping areas for RVs and tents, as well as cabin rentals.
Venice, Louisiana
-
Travel south to Venice, Louisiana, and you’ll discover Cypress Cove Marina, which is where most fishermen in the area kick off their daily boating adventures.
-
The Delta National Wildlife Refuge boasts more than 250 different species of birds and prime access to the end of the Mississippi River. But even more important to our fisherman friends, the Delta marsh allows fishers to catch both freshwater and saltwater fish in one picturesque spot!
- Nearby, the completely restored Woodland Plantation is another visitor favorite for the history alone! Excellent dining, deluxe rooms and attentive service all make for a memorable experience. Look out for those 'gators though! (Watch the video above to see exactly what we mean!)
Our friends over at Louisiana Travel are always encouraging locals and visitors alike to "Pick Your Passion." If you need more information on the best fishing spots in the Pelican state, head over to their site for the full lowdown!
