2016's Best Free Travel Apps

With so many amazing mobile apps out there, choosing a travel planning app to help map out your next vacation can be a little daunting.

Today, we've broken down our favorite apps for traveling in 2016, all free to download and available for both Android and iPhone. Let's get started!

  • First on the list is the free app Hipmunk, which helps users search and purchase plane tickets, accommodations, and exclusive deals. Thanks to their smooth, easy-to-use slider features, savvy travelers can easily plan out their travel day by choosing flight options with the best WiFi and quickest layovers. Use the "ecstasy" option to sort hotels by the perfect mix of low prices, high ratings, and raving reviews, and scan the "deals" tab to discover affordable flights and accommodations without ever limiting yourself to one destination.
  • Once your flight is booked, it's time to survive the woes of modern-day air travel. Save yourself a headache and download the app Gate Guru for real-time updates on TSA line waiting times, flight delays, gate changes, and more. The app also features airport maps and last-minute Avis rental car bookings to boot!
  • Having just launched last fall, the new app AirGrub lets you purchase food before even arriving at the airport. Simply enter your flight information, pick out your meal from any vendor in your chosen airport, order and pay, and expect your food to be waiting for you at the gate! AirGrub currently operates at New York's JFK, Boston's Logan, and San Francisco International airports, with additional cities expected to come in the near future.
