Castillo De San Marcos

The oldest masonry fort within the United States, the Castillo De San Marcos National Monument was originally one part of a city-sprawling architectural system, including a wall that surrounded the city of St. Augustine. According to the official site, the star-like shape of the building was the result of a 15th century ideology that combined the warfare technology of the time with architectural design, using the pointed corners as a place to "effectively mount cannons to repel any attackers." Today, though some of the building is restored, it still quite the sight to behold for locals and day-tripping tourists alike.
