Four Must-Have Carry On Items

By Travel Savvy

Packing for a summer getaway? Next to the phone charger and granola bar we'll definitely have a few other must-haves in our carry-on. Here are four things we won’t leave home without this summer.

1

Linen Travel Wrap by White and Warren

We're in love with this simple linen wrap by White and Warren, which will provide a lightweight shield against the cool nighttime breezes coming off the ocean. You can still wear your spaghetti-strapped camisole to dinner while you use the wrap to protect against the A/C shivers.

Summer Must Reads

How about a good book to read poolside? We’ve got two picks this summer:

Educated, by Tara Westover, is the award winning memoir about the author’s childhood in Idaho. From her website, “Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches and sleeping with her 'head-for-the-hills bag.' In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father’s junkyard.” At 17, “lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. She taught herself enough mathematics and grammar to be admitted to Brigham Young University, where she studied history, learning for the first time about important world events like the Holocaust and the civil rights movement.”

And of course, we've already pre-ordered the much anticipated 3nd book from the self-proclaimed King of All Media, Howard Stern Comes Again. Due out in May, Stern reveals secrets and show gems, and generally bares his soul as one of the greatest interviewers of all time.

Sunscreen That's Better for the Environment

Hawaii and Key West have announced their plans to ban non-biodegradable sunscreen as of 2021, because certain chemicals in widely used in SPF lotions can harm ocean life and coral reefs. In fact, even a “small amount of sunscreen containing the ingredient oxybenzone is enough to break down coral, causing it to lose its nutrients, turn ghostly white or bleach and often die.”

Thank goodness our new favorite biodegradable pick by Coola-- the Full Spectrum 360° Mineral Sun Silk Crème Organic Sunscreen SPF 30--is free of ocean reef-killing substances, and also provides Non-Nano Zinc Oxide protection, which means that the zinc oxide particles won’t seep past your skin and into your bloodstream.

Cleanliness is Key: WC Tonic No. 2 Spray

We’re all about cleanliness, and on long travel days our go-to item is WC Tonic No. 2, which we use to dampen our toilet paper to ensure our bums are super clean and happy. Also, we’re super psyched that this spray helps people avoid so-called flushable wipes, which are bad for the environment and damaging to sewer systems--and not actually flushable.

Available in a travel-approved 2 oz. bottle, this versatile spray can also be used to freshen up any body parts that need a little extra care on hot summer days, like armpits, sweaty necks, and anywhere else you might feel like spritzing.
