George Motz's Favorite Chicago Burgers

Author, documentarian and America's foremost hamburger expert George Motz talks about the best Chicago burgers.

  • Au Cheval makes a great burger with a piece of pork belly and fried egg on top. The decor suggests 1930s-era Chicago where Eliot Ness could stop in for a bite. We suggest you get there early to beat the line.
  • Owen & Engine is a gastropub that has one of the best beer selections in Chicago. Along with their outstanding burger, you can expect such British staples as Scotch eggs, Cornish pasties, ploughman's lunch, bubble & squeak, bangers & mash and fish & chips.
  • M Burger is a chain restaurant that was born out of the renowed Chicago restaurant, Tru. M serves a straightforward, fast food burger made with fresh ground beef. There's even a secret menu if you know the right people. Shhhhhhh.
  • Edzo's is a new hot dog and hamburger stand with a retro vibe. You'll have to venture up to Evanston by Northwestern University to chow down on their 8 oz. char burger and Chicago dog.
  • Fatso's Last Stand is an old school hot dog stand that makes an extremely tasteful flame-grilled burger. What makes their burger different is that they use a minimally-processed cheddar spread as a topping.
